The blood donated today is the one received from volunteers at the Edward Moringe Sokoine Memorial Week event which was held at the Sokoine University of Agriculture main campus grounds from May 24 to May 27, 2021.

The handover was made by the principal of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities from SUA, Prof. Samuel Kabote on behalf of the vice chancellor Prof. Raphael Chibunda at the offices of the hospital located in Morogoro municipality.

Speaking during the handover, Professor Kabote explained that in honor of the late Edward Sokoine, various activities were carried out by members of the University community including voluntary blood donation.

He added that the blood donation was made by various groups of people where a large group were students, SUA staff as well as citizens of Morogoro Municipality who had the opportunity to attend and participate in the celebrations.

For his part, the Medical Officer in charge of Morogoro Referral Hospital, Dr. Kusirye Boniface Ukio, thanked SUA for seeing the importance of donating safe blood for saving the lives of citizens especially mothers who are giving birth, children, and victims of accidents.

"What you have done is not small you have touched where it needs to be touched because our hospital and the region as a whole has a great need for safe blood so we are grateful to SUA for that" said Dr. Ukio

He also provided regional assessments that 70 percent of maternal deaths are due to excessive blood loss after childbirth, and 20 percent due to epilepsy and that the blood from SUA will significantly improve the lives of citizens.

He said the hospital needed more than 6,000 bottles of safe blood per year, which are collected from all the councils of the region depending on the population in each council.
